KEY LARGO, Fla. — A firefighter who was seriously injured during a manhole rescue is no longer in a coma.
Key Largo firefighter Leonardo Moreno was transported to the hospital after attempting to save three utility workers who died from poisonous gas fumes Monday, reported Miami CBS.
Moreno, an 8-year veteran, is expected to remain the hospital for another four days.
“Even when he was sedated he was reacting, responding, waking up, so we’re hopeful that everything is going to come out great,” Moreno’s brother, Yoel Moreno, said.
When Moreno became unconscious while attempting to rescue the three men, he was pulled out by fellow firefighters, who performed CPR and revived him.
“It took a lot of bravery to do what he did,” firefighter Rafael Calante said. “I just saw him down there unconscious and I knew that he wasn’t going to stay down there.”
A GoFundMe page has raised over $7,000 to help pay for Moreno’s medical bills.
