ST. ALBANS, W.Va. — Nine people have been hurt, two critically, after more than three dozen vehicles were involved in an early-evening pileup on an Interstate 64 bridge in West Virginia.

Amy Shuler Goodwin, a spokeswoman for Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin, said 38 vehicles were involved in the wrecks Thursday evening on a bridge crossing the Kanawha River at St. Albans, near Charleston.

State highway spokesman Brent Walker says nine people were taken to area hospitals with injuries.

Goodwin said that while authorities were still trying to determine the cause, a sudden rain squall had hit the area before the wrecks.

She said those stranded included a group of Winfield High School seniors heading to graduation. Another bus took them to the ceremony.

Walker said two of those injured were in critical condition.
