SEQUIM, Wash. — Firefighters on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula say a 40-foot boat has exploded at the town of Sequim (skwihm), seriously injuring one man.

Clallam County fire officials say the Tuesday evening explosion was powerful enough to knock the unidentified man into the water and damage boats as far as 75 yards away.

People in a nearby boat rescued the injured man from the water. He was taken to a Port Angeles hospital.

The boat had been at a slip at the John Wayne Marina.

It’s not clear what caused the explosion. The Port of Port Angeles, county Fire District 3 and the Coast Guard have started containment measures for fuel and oil from the shattered boat, which has since sunk.
