UPPER TOWNSHIP, N.J. — An EMT who collapsed while responding to a medical emergency earlier this month has died.

NJ.com reported that EMT Mort Schmerling, with the Upper Township Rescue Squad, responded to the call on April 13. He collapsed during the call and died Saturday.

Schmerling’s daughter, Rebecca, posted a comment on Facebook saying the squad was her father’s “happy place.”

“My family would like to thank Upper Township Rescue Squad and Atlanticare for their continued support through this tough time” she wrote. “Words cannot describe how grateful we are. Even though this was a tragic time, it really was a little easier knowing all of you were there for us.”

Funeral arrangements are pending. We will update you once more information becomes available.
