JACKSON, Miss. — When Lisa Adams answered a 911 call earlier this month, the mother who needed help was already in labor.

The mother, pregnant with her first child, was at her sister’s south Jackson house when her water broke. It was almost 9:45 p.m. on Dec. 1. She could be heard in the background as her sister talked to Adams, an emergency medical dispatcher for American Medical Response.

Adams asked the sister questions about the mother’s condition. Is there any bleeding? Can she feel any part of the baby?
