MONROE, Conn. — If the weather is bad, the newest of Monroe Emergency Service’s three ambulances is the one least likely to transport anyone to a hospital.

That’s because when it rains, it pours inside the ambulance. The precipitation leaks through the roof and drizzles through the overhead lights that shine down on patients strapped to gurneys.

“It’s our ambulance of last resort,” said Anna Maria LaGuardia, Monroe EMS deputy chief. “We try to only take it out if the sun is shining. Otherwise, patients can get rained on.” Ironically, it’s the service’s “newest van-style ambulance,” LaGuardia said. “It has only 40,000 miles on it.”
