SANDWICH, Mass. — A 5-year-old boy was pulled unresponsive from Snake Pond in Sandwich Sunday evening, officials said.

Around 7 p.m., a 911 caller told police that the boy was missing at Snake Pond Beach. Moments later, police were informed the boy had been found underwater and was not breathing, the Sandwich Police Department said in a statement.

Bystanders were performing CPR when police arrived alongside members of the Sandwich Fire Department. The boy was treated at the beach by police officers and paramedics and brought by ambulance to Falmouth Hospital.

Police did not have a further update on the condition of the boy, who was at the beach with a parent.

Investigators with the Massachusetts State Police and Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office did not believe any foul play contributed to the incident, police said.

Recent weeks have seen several drownings at beaches, ponds and rivers across Massachusetts. A 6-year-old boy was swept away by the Merrimack River and drowned on June 9, while the boy’s mother died attempting to save her son. An 18-year-old recent graduate of Everett High School drowned after jumping into a Gloucester last Wednesday. Multiple drowning incidents have also occurred on Worcester’s Lake Quinsigamond.
