CARY, Ill. — An anonymous wealthy couple is donating a large amount of money to a fire department.

The Northwest Herald reported that the couple originally planned to give $60,000 to the village of Cary, but trustees refused to accept the donation without knowing the identity of the donors, so they are instead donating $35,000 to the Cary Fire Protection District.

“If somebody wants to donate money for the benefit of the community, why wouldn’t we accept it?” Chief Jeffrey Macko said.

Macko added that the department plans to use the donation to purchase a new defibrillator.

The couple worked with the Community Foundation for McHenry County, who was originally going to pay for the defibrillator.

“It was 100 percent anonymous,” the foundation’s executive director, Robin Doeden, said.

Cary Fire Protection District’s Board of Trustees member Mark Guerra said the department was very grateful for the donation.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you,” he said.
