Off-duty firefighter husband, nurse wife honored for saving toddler

The couple performed CPR on a boy floating face down in a community pool

PEORIA, Ariz. — A firefighter and his wife, a nurse, were honored during a city council meeting for rescuing a 2-year-old boy who nearly drowned in a community swimming pool.

“These citizens exemplify everything about what makes this city such a great place to live. I’m proud to call them constituents and fellow Peorians,” said Peoria Vice Mayor Bridget Binsbacher.

According to KPHO, the toddler was at the Vistancia community pool on May 30 when he slipped away from his father and was found floating face-down.

The father pulled the little boy out of the water and yelled for help.

Tait Mitton, a North County Fire-Medical Department firefighter who was off-duty at the time, and his wife, Mynon Mitton, a nurse, took over and began CPR on the toddler.

After about a minute of chest compressions and rescue breathing, the boy began breathing and crying.

He was flown to Phoenix Children’s Hospital in stable condition, and has since recovered from the incident.

The Mittons were recognized for their actions on Tuesday during a meeting of the Peoria City Council.
