LEXINGTON, Ky. — A paramedic on the scene of a collision began attacking a fire so that responders could extricate a man in one of the involved vehicles.
He used at least three fire extinguishers to attack the blaze on Interstate 75 but despite his efforts, Christoper Shawn Truesdell, 41, suffered serious burns and was pronounced dead at the University of Kentucky Medical Center.
The ambulance was returning from a run and was nearby when the crew heard the accident call over the radio. Truesdell was traveling south when a sedan crossed the median and hit his vehicle, Sgt. Derek Thomas of the Madison County Sheriff’s Department told the Richmond Register.
The sedan was driven by a woman with her two sons, ages 12 and 4, in the car. She and her 12-year-old were hospitalized in critical condition. The younger boy suffered injuries not considered life threatening.
The crash is under investigation.
