MIFFLINBURG, Pa. — Greg Shaffer suffered a near-fatal heart attack April 21 at the best place possible — inside the Mifflinburg Ambulance station with a paramedic at his side.

“My cardiologist said if it had happened anywhere else, I’d be dead,” the 40-year-old Mount Pleasant Mills man said.

Paramedic Corey Aungst said Shaffer’s heart did stop for a few minutes. “I was talking to him, and then all of a sudden it was like he was having a seizure,” said Aungst, 26, a part-time paramedic and flight attendant from Lock Haven. “I went to support him so he didn’t fall out of his chair, and he gave me one last look, like he was dying. I’ve seen it a million times, the look of death in someone’s eyes.”
