WOODBURN, Ore. — As a young man, Ray Schenewerk served in the US Navy. Later in life, he battled cancer, and twice went to the hospital in an ambulance.
He died last December, but his widow, Valita Weaver, kept getting billed for the ambulance rides, rides the VA should have covered. The rides totaled about $800.
But the ambulance company kept sending the bills to Weaver. She kept calling and faxing the bills to the VA while she was taking care of her husband. Eventually, the ambulance company turned the charges over to a collection agency. Weaver got scared and paid the bills.
