NEW YORK — They won gold medals at the Olympics, but the Bryan brothers almost met their match when they squared off against city firefighters Thursday. Mike and Bob Bryan, fresh off winning the gold in tennis earlier this month, joined a charity ping pong tournament in Manhattan against 32 members of the FDNY.
“We’re in trouble,” Bob Bryan said after a ball lodged by firefighter Glenn Brown sailed past him.“I’m running for my life.” The brothers sneaked out a narrow victory against Brown, 35, of Engine 1 in Manhattan, and his ping pong partner for the day, Cptn. Tom Spade, 49, of Engine 242 in Bay Ridge.
Brown and Spade beat 30 other FDNY members from all five boroughs in a tournament at SPiN Galactic in Chelsea Thursday before facing the gold medalists. In a best of three against the FDNY champs, the twin brothers won the first match 11 to 9 and the second 11 to 7.
