HICKS BAY, New Zealand — Shockwaves of grief have ripped through the East Coast after a local hero was killed in the line of duty, only days before he was to be presented with a medal.
St John Hicks Bay First Response team leader Ray Barrett, and his firefighter son Tahi, were rushing to the aid of people in a car crash when the fire truck they were travelling in flipped down a bank one kilometre from Hicks Bay on Saturday.
The impact of the crash ripped the old Bedford truck in two.
