Texas city seeks law against speeding ambulances

Official says ambulances run “hot” on calls that do not require such haste

BOERNE, Texas — Concerns about private ambulances speeding to nonemergency calls has prompted Kendall County EMS Director Jeff Fincke to ask the city to regulate the services.

He wants an ordinance adopted, modeled after a San Antonio code, that would require ambulances to get dispatchers’ permission to handle emergency calls in the Kendall County EMS service area, where it is the designated 911 respondent.

Fincke contends that one firm, Metro Ambulance of Schertz, often runs “hot” — using lights and sirens — on calls that do not require such haste.
