ABERDEEN, Scotland — A paramedic trainee may lose his job after being caught speeding while delivering vital equipment that was needed for a surgical operation to a hospital.
Daily Mail reported that Johnny Kerr was caught driving over 100 mph in a 70 mph zone while taking the equipment to a surgeon who was forced to abandon the operation, leaving the patient in the ICU.
Kerr was volunteering for a charity that delivers medical supplies at the time and did not think he would face legal consequences for the incident.
However, officials said Kerr did not fill out the proper forms that would have exempted him from prosecution.
Kerr was dismissed from the charity organization for “gross misconduct” due to rules that forbid drivers from speeding, but he said he was not aware of the policy.
“I take great pride in my driving,” Kerr said. “I have a clean license and I have been driving ambulances for five or six years. I have been dealing with the stress of this situation while studying for exams as I am training to be a paramedic.”
“We had been told the patient was in intensive care and the equipment was urgently needed to save their life,” Kerr added.
Kerr said he feels “hung out to dry” and claimed the organization did not apply for him to be exempted from prosecution.
