PITTSBURGH — A Zone 5 Pittsburgh police officer was recovering in a hospital after being involved in a nasty crash Sunday afternoon in the city’s Friendship neighborhood.

Channel 4 Action News’ Ashlie Hardway reported that the officer’s cruiser was struck by an ambulance while he was responding to a call of a man with a gun.

The passenger side of the police officer’s car suffered heavy damage.

“It looks really bad,” said Kevin Smith, of Friendship. “I guess he got hit in the back, and then hit the pole and flipped around. It could have been a lot worse.”

Police said that the officer had his lights and siren on when the crash happened at the intersection of Friendship and South Aiken avenues.

His injuries are not considered to be life-threatening, Hardway reported.

“I didn’t know if he’d be all right, but he seemed to be fine,” said Smith. “They opened the door. He was stumbling a little bit, but he seemed OK. Later on. he was taking pictures. He seemed fine.”

The ambulance was on its way to pick up a patient at the time of the crash.

The driver of the ambulance was taken to a hospital after complaining of neck pain.
