BRIGHTON, N.Y. — The driver of a Rural/Metro ambulance was ticketed for failure to yield the right of way during a left turn following a crash Sunday in Brighton.
Melissa Onderdonk, 43, and fellow paramedic Dennis Paone Jr., 27, were transporting Erwin Leonard, 82, to Highland Hospital from the Jewish Home, said Brighton Police Capt. Robert Cline.
The ambulance was heading north on South Winton Road and making a left turn on the entrance ramp to Interstate 590 when it collided with a southbound car about 2:20 p.m. The ambulance was on a non-emergency run and did not have its emergency lights or sirens on, police said.
Onderdonk, Paone and Leonard were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital, where Leonard later died. Edith Warner, 84, of Rochester, the driver of the car, and her passenger, Abe Levitt, 98, of Rochester were listed in satisfactory condition at Strong Monday.
Rural/Metro officials said in a statement Monday that they regret the loss of life from the crash and will conduct an internal investigation.
