NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. — Two students were killed Friday when their car hit an ambulance traveling code-3 in South Carolina.

The Volkswagen Jetta was heading west on a highway in Newberry County when the ambulance approached them from the rear with its sirens and lights activated, according to WISTV.com.

Troopers told the website that the driver moved to the right of the road to allow the ambulance to pass, but then moved back into the roadway, striking the ambulance.

Two passengers in the back of the car, Lea Kraemer, 22, and Sarah Doelker, 23, died in the crash, while two other people in the car suffered injuries.

An EMT in the ambulance and a patient were also injured, but their injuries were not life-threatening.
