Man arrested after stealing ambulance, threatening to run over medic

He stole the ambulance from an ER parking lot; a paramedic and a nurse tried to stop him, but he drove toward them, forcing them to run to avoid being hit

CHICAGO — A man who stole a private ambulance from a Rockford hospital parking lot Wednesday afternoon was arrested several hours later in northwest suburban Belvidere after the ambulance was found ditched in McHenry County, police said.

Paul Chandler, 51, stole the Metro Medical Services, Inc., ambulance from the emergency parking lot of Rockford Memorial Hospital about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to a release from Rockford police. He faces charges of aggravated assault of a police officer and motor vehicle theft and was expected to appear for a bond hearing this afternoon, according to Winnebago County Jail records.

Police were dispatched to Rockford Memorial, 2400 N. Rockton Ave. in Rockford, at 4:39 p.m. Wednesday, and determined Chandler had gotten into the ambulance while it was parked and left alone, according to the release. A paramedic and a nurse tried to stop him, but he drove ambulance toward them, forcing them to run to avoid being hit.

Chandler then drove off.
