BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — First responders from multiple agencies searched for about an hour Thursday before finding two wreck victims lost in the woods.
The victim called 911 about 1:15 p.m. Thursday to report he had crashed off Interstate 22 near Coalburg Road and was stuck, and lost, in a wooded area. He said he was injured, and then his phone went dead, authorities said. The male caller and a female had been off-roading in a four-wheel vehicle.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service, Fultondale Fire Department, Birmingham police, Fultondale police, Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies and Regional Paramedical Service responded to the scene. Law enforcement was able to track the victim’s cell phone signal to a specific area to the west of eastbound I-22.
A Hummer was used to search by ground and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Star 1 helicopter assisted in the search. Those aboard Star 1 were able to spot the wreckage from the air and hovered over that location until the ground crews could get to the victims. One victim suffered minor injuries and the other was not hurt.
