BEAR MOUNTAIN, N.Y. — EMTs from several departments in Rockland County saved hikers during a flash flood on July 9.

Stony Point EMTs recalled the rescue of two hikers swept downhill in Bear Mountain State Park, CBS New York reported.

“It was honestly like a movie,” Stony Point EMS Youth Corps Capt. Vincent Orfini said.

Two hikers were stranded and two others, a father and son, were swept down the mountain approximately 50 to 100 feet.

“We did have divers come with us. We did have them set up rope systems to hold on to while we were traversing over waterfalls that were created by the rain,” EMT Kenneth Hoyt said.

The father suffered a broken femur, dislocated knee and broken ankle.

The mountain roads were washed out during the rescue, so the volunteers administered care for approximately four hours until a way down became clear.

After rescuing the hikers, the rescuers came across 40 people stranded in their vehicles and assisted them. The entire operation lasted about seven hours.
