2 rescued from rock in W.Va. river

Dam was shut down; water receded enough to allow rescuers to get both victims to shore, transport them to waiting ambulance

COTTON HILL, W.Va. — Authorities say two people were rescued from a rock in the New River near Cotton Hill.

Meredith Gray of the Ansted and Fayetteville fire departments says the Fayette County Emergency Operations Center dispatched emergency responders just after 8 p.m. Sunday.

The Register-Herald reports that two people — a male and a female — were stranded by rapidly rising water released by the Hawk’s Nest dam.

Once the dam was shut down, the water receded enough to allow rescuers to get both victims to shore and transport them to a waiting ambulance. The male victim complained of a leg injury.

About a half-dozen emergency agencies responded to the scene.
