BATON ROUGE, La. — A man shot twice in the legs during a home invasion in Old South Baton Rouge survived after a Baton Rouge policewoman managed to staunch his bleeding until paramedics arrived.
The victim was shot at a home at 670 Taylor St. around 2 a.m. Monday, said Sgt. Don Coppola Jr., a police spokesman.
Officer Cynthia Bethel found the man — who was losing “massive amounts of blood” from gunshot wounds to both legs — and applied tourniquets to slow the bilateral arterial bleed, the Police Department said in a Facebook post Tuesday.
“Ofc. Bethel did not hesitate to take action when she saw what needed to be done and her rapid response saved the victim’s life.”
Paramedics arrived shortly afterward and rushed the victim to the hospital. Coppola said Tuesday afternoon that the man is receiving treatment for wounds that are no longer considered life-threatening.
Coppola said the shooting remains under investigation and no arrests have yet been made.
