BENNINGTON, Vt. — Caffeine and nicotine were the only substances to show up in the returned toxicology tests of a local EMT who died in June when the ambulance he was driving crashed, police said.

Dale Long, 48, a member of the Bennington Rescue Squad, was killed in a June 15 crash on West Road Monday when the ambulance veered off the road and struck another vehicle before colliding with a tree.

Long had served as a paramedic and EMT in the area for about 25 years.
