FOREST PARK, Ga. — A first responder died after contracting COVID-19 while on duty.

Firefighter-Paramedic John Clay Gaddy tested positive for the coronavirus in August, and died from complications of the virus on Sept. 2, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

A 12-year veteran of Forest Park Fire Department, Gaddy is survived by his wife, Kris; his children, Tyler; Amber; Hardy, Morgan and Caleb.

Gaddy was posthumously promoted to deputy fire marshal.

A GoFundMe fundraiser has been set up to help Gaddy's family.
