The trucks will now be able to deploy CPAP machines for patients in severe respiratory distress; albuterol treatments for patients with asthma or related tightening of the airway; epinephrine and Benadryl for severe allergic reactions; ibuprofen and acetaminophen for pain management; glucose for patients with a diabetic emergency; and perform manual suction during CPR.
The department received training through a partnership with Baystate Medical Center, the Emergency Medical Technician Academy, and the department’s emergency medical services coordinator. Licensing was approved by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
Funding for the equipment was approved by the Chicopee City Council. Local 1710, the union that represents the Fire Department, and the mayor collaborated to get the certification.
