NJ Supreme Court refuses to stop hospital takeover of EMS

The state Supreme Court refused to rule against a law that allowed a Camden hospital to take over EMS services in the city

CAMDEN, N.J.— The New Jersey Supreme Court has denied a petition from Virtua Health to stop a law allowing Cooper University Hospital to take over EMS services in Camden.

The law, enacted in July, was ruled unconstitutional last month, after Virtua Health sued the state, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

An Appellate Division court issued a stay on the judge’s decision to rule the law unconstitutional, allowing the law to proceed while Cooper sought an appeal.

The state Supreme Court refused to change course on Tuesday.

Virtua Health CEO Richard P. Miller said he was disappointed with the decision and that the hospital’s paramedics would be ready to resume work when given the chance.

The litigation will continue before the Appellate Division.
