WATERTOWN, N.Y. — A former chief of the Cape Vincent Ambulance Squad is back in jail after failing to appear for a scheduled court date.

Jeffrey Call was arrested in July on allegations that he stole more than $157,000 from the ambulance squad, WWNY reported. Court officials said Call missed his scheduled conference in Jefferson County Court on Nov. 2, prompting a judge to issue a bench warrant.

He was later taken into custody by police.

Call was charged with second-degree grand larceny and falsifying business records, accused of stealing more than $157,000 from the ambulance squad through unauthorized salaries, bonuses and vacation time for himself and others.

The ambulance squad board uncovered the alleged scheme in late 2024 and reported it to state police, who investigated with the comptroller’s office.

A forensic audit found Call, who oversaw payroll, paid himself, the deputy chief and his girlfriend unauthorized extra salaries and bonuses from 2022 through 2024, inflated their hours, and was paid for CVAS work during hours he was simultaneously working at Guilfoyle.
