NC paramedic arrested, charged with first-degree murder

The 37-year-old medic called 911 to report the victim “came at him;" sheriff says incident “was not a random act of violence”

HAMPSTEAD, N.C. — Detectives with the Pender County Sheriff’s Office have arrested a man after a fatal shooting in Hampstead Friday morning.

According to officials, 37-year-old Dennis Robert Westberg, a paramedic at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, has been charged with first-degree murder and is currently in the Pender County Jail under no bond. Chief Deputy Keith Hinkle says the shooting happened in the 400 block of Moores Landing Road.

Captain Jim Hock said officers responded to the home after receiving a 911 call from Westberg around 6:10 a.m. in reference to shots fired. Hock said deputies found Westberg outside the home when they arrived and secured him for the safety of everyone involved.
