COLUMBIA, S.C. — The City of Columbia and Richland County are getting close to letting firefighters drive ambulances, changing a controversial policy that we’ve been following for two years.

Months after the issue surfaced in the death of 3-year-old Jaden Myers Pugh and almost two years since Columbia Mayor Bob Coble raised questions about it, the city and Richland County have all but finalized a plan allowing firefighters to drive county ambulances.

“I think all the issues seem to be resolved,” said Coble. “We’re getting a little bit more information from DHEC about training costs but I don’t think there are any hurdles left. Doesn’t seem to be. Hopefully we’ll have it before the city council in the next week or so to approve.”
