DEARBORN COUNTY, Ind. — An Indiana EMT who disappeared last month, after allegedly stealing $106,000 from the EMS service that employed him, has resurfaced and surrendered to authorities.
WCPO.com reported Aurora EMT Craig Whitham, 42, was charged with felony counts of theft and attempted theft. He was booked into the Dearborn County jail on Wednesday.
Whitham, an EMT with the company for 22 years, is accused of stealing the money during his one year stint as treasurer. The private, non-profit company has an annual budget of about $200,000.
The president of Aurora Emergency Rescue, Ed Opp, noticed discrepancies in the company’s books and called police last month.
According to the Aurora Police, Whitham disappeared shortly after being questioned about the missing money.
After surrendering, Whitham told police he wrote checks to himself, made unauthorized ATM transactions, and paid himself more than his salary, according to an affidavit filed by investigators.
Whitham also told police he had a gambling addiction and had spent nearly all of the stolen money on gambling.
