Calif. crews rescue injured teenage climber

13-year-old victim had been climbing on rocks near beach when large boulder came loose, trapping, pinning him

PACIFICA, Calif. — On Jan. 7, 2012 at 5:04 p.m., four Fire Companies and one Chief Officer responded to a technical rescue at the cliffside of 800 Palmetto Avenue in Pacifica.

The first arriving fire company on scene gained access to the 13-year-old victim who had been climbing on rocks near the beach when a large boulder came loose, trapping and pinning, as well as crushing his legs. Fire companies using hydraulic rescue equipment required approximately 90 minutes to complete the technical rescue of lifting the boulder and extricating the injured victim.

Firefighter paramedics performed advanced life support measures, and stabilized and packaged the victim for ambulance transport to San Francisco General Hospital for further medical treatment.
