YPSILANTI, N.D. — A 75-year-old Ypsilanti man found dead Tuesday morning in his yard apparently died from hypothermia, according to the Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office.

Detective Sgt. Jason Falk said in a news release Wednesday that preliminary autopsy results indicate that Alvin N. Peterson died from hypothermia.

Peterson’s body was found near his home at 4232 84th Ave. SE, about 1 mile south of where a damaged vehicle was found around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. The vehicle, which was owned by Peterson, was found near the intersection of 41st Street and 84th Avenue Southeast, about 8 miles south of Jamestown.

At 9:30 p.m. Monday, the sheriff’s office responded to a report of a hit-and-run vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 281 South near mile marker 66 south of Jamestown. Falk said Peterson’s vehicle had side-swiped a semitrailer which was traveling north on Highway 281. The vehicle continued traveling south after the accident, although there were reports of debris on the road.

On Tuesday morning, sheriff’s office deputies went to Peterson’s home after determining that he owned the damaged vehicle and found Peterson’s body.

The death remains under investigation, according to the Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office.
