FDNY EMS Lt. JoAnn Restko died after an off-duty fall while hiking in the Adirondack mountains.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. ― FDNY EMS Lt. JoAnn Restko died in an off-duty hiking accident in the Adirondack mountains Saturday afternoon.

Restko, 37, of Arden Heights, New York, died after falling more than 80 feet near Roaring Brook Falls, reported SILive. She was hiking with a friend when she went to a ledge at the top of the falls to take a photo.

When Restko disappeared from sight her friend attempted to locate her before calling Department of Environmental Conservation rangers. Restko’s body was found at the base of the falls.

“This is a terrible tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers are with JoAnn Restko’s family at this difficult time,” Daniel Nigro, FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro, said in a statement Sunday night.
