NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. — After a paramedic was killed last year, friends and colleagues organized a blood drive to remember him.
Jessamine County paramedic John Mackey, 40, stepped out of an ambulance after it was clipped to check the damage; he was struck by another vehicle while doing so.
“He was all about giving back to others, even in death,” Dawn Jett told WKYT. “He donated his organs so his memory will live on.”
Friends and colleagues said the drive serves as a way to memorialize and pay tribute to Mackey.
“We are going to attempt to do this every year, just to make sure that somebody else’s family might have another year with their loved one,” Jett said.
