According to Sterling Heights police, police and fire personnel were called to the collision and began rendering aid to the individuals involved in the crash.

The initial investigation shows an Aspire Health System ambulance was headed south on Van Dyke with its emergency equipment activated. As the ambulance proceeded through the intersection, it was struck on the right side of the passenger bay by a 2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

“The ambulance rolled over in the collision before coming to rest right side up,” police said in a news release.

Police said the ambulance had a crew of two and was transporting a patient in the rear bay.

The 36-year-old patient, a resident of North Branch in Lapeer County, died at a hospital, according to police. The rear passenger crew member was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries, while the driver of the Jeep was transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Aspire Health System officials did not respond to a request for comment.

Authorities said it does not appear that intoxication was a factor in the crash. However, all contributing circumstances remain under investigation.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact Officer Justin Porter of the traffic safety bureau at 586-446-2920.
