In this week’s Inside EMS Quick Clip, co-hosts Chris Cebollero and Kelly Grayson speak with Donny Richard from Vermont’s Brattleboro Retreat, which offers an intensive outpatient program to address mental health issues.
Cebollero asks if there’s a common theme or certain triggers that can help EMS providers recognize when they should seek help.
Cebollero points out that an unexpected stress response can be an indication.
“It’s the day your computer doesn’t connect to the internet that puts you over the edge,” Cebollero said.
Richard agreed.
“It’s the little stuff that winds up causing a lot of problems.”
He provides information on how to take that first step of talking to someone, and encourages EMS providers not to wait until things fall apart before seeking treatment.
“This is a health care epidemic among first responders,” Richard said.
