BALTIMORE — A burglary suspect pronounced dead by medical technicians after he was shot in the head by police lay for about 30 minutes on the floor of a Northwest Baltimore convenience store before officers noticed he was alive, city police said Monday.

It is a mistake that rarely happens among paramedics, according to officials from the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians, the largest organization representing EMS practitioners.

Jerry Johnson, NAEMT’s immediate past president, said statistics are not kept on the number of annual misdiagnosis cases, but said he occasionally hears of a few.
