6 N.C. firefighters injured in collapse during EMS call

Firefighters and a patient fell to the ground when the roof of the Burlington structure collapsed

BURLINGTON, N.C. — Six Burlington firefighters were hospitalized following a structural collapse on Oct. 28 that began as an EMS call.

Battalion Chief Daniel Shoffner told WFMY News 2 that workers were working on the roof of a house under construction when one worker suffered a medical emergency.

The Burlington Fire Department, Whitsett Fire Department and Guilford County Emergency Services personnel responded to the scene and worked to lower the patient to the ground.

As reported by the Burlington Fire Department, firefighters were in the process of aiding the patient and attempting to safely lower him to the ground when the structure suddenly gave way. Several firefighters and the patient fell to the ground.

Six firefighters were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The original patient’s condition was not stated.

Shoffner said the cause of the collapse is unknown.
