Bystanders, EMS, hospital all critical to cardiac emergency survival

Heart attack patient benefits from continuum of care

The Emporia Gazette

EMPORIA, Kan. — On Nov. 25, Jason Steinhoff experienced his worst nightmare while driving an 18 wheeler cross country: severe chest pain.

He remembers feeling severely dizzy, nauseated and having chest pain he had only heard about others having. Steinhoff, a 40-year-old truck driver from Los Angeles, was driving a full load from Albuquerque to Detroit. Having signed up for health care insurance for the first time just a year ago, he recounted the thought of he has coverage. He also recalls mile marker 155, the T.A. Truck Stop at Lebo, a rapid response by dispatchers there, and Coffey County EMS being there fast.

As EMS was loading him up, he remembers them talking to him: “Stay with us ...you’ll be okay.”
