NEWPORT, Ky. — The costly medication used to counteract the effects of heroin, Narcan, comes with high price tags that the Newport Fire Department says will “completely destroy” its budget.
Each vial containing 2 milligrams of Narcan runs about $21 each for the Northern Kentucky fire team.
General Fernbach, Newport Fire Engineer Paramedic, said his crews responded to 77 heroin overdoses in 2013, and used 89 vials of Narcan on those cases.
