MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A West Virginia nurse hurt in a 2009 ambulance crash is suing an EMS agency, accusing a medic of reckless driving.
Neonatal transport nurse Melissa Slavensky was treating a premature baby girl in November when the Monongalia EMS ambulance they were travelling in hit a median and flipped, according to The Dominion Post.
Joshua David Slagle drove the ambulance “at a high rate of speed and in an unsafe and reckless manner,” the lawsuit says.
The grandfather of the baby, who survived, credits Slavensky for saving the baby’s life during the crash, shielding her from the impact.
Slavensky suffered injuries, including broken arms, a head blow, scarring and disfigurement, and reactions to medications for both her pain and hospital-acquired infections, The Dominion Post said.
According to her attorney, Slavensky has returned to nursing, but is now unable to do medical transports.
Slavensky and her husband Roy Slavensky are suing for payment of medical bills, lost wages and an unspecified sum of money for punitive damages, according to the report.
