MONTICELLO, Ind. — A fire department honored a fallen paramedic Friday by naming their new ambulance after him.
Paramedic Larry Smith died from a terminal illness earlier this year; he had served the Monticello Fire Department for 22 years before retiring.
On Oct. 14, the department unveiled the new ALS ambulance, which has Smith’s portrait, name and last alarm on its side.
Smith was one of the White County’s first three paramedics, when ALS was first offered by the department in 1981, reported WLFI.
“It’s kind of neat to see his name and his picture on the vehicles up here,” Smith’s son, Joe Smith, said. “People in the community are going to see this for at least the next six years it’s in service so it’s pretty awesome.”
Smith served as the department’s first EMT coordinator, and played a central role in bring ALS ambulances to the county.
