CHATSWORTH, Ga. — A Chatsworth woman who was hospitalized in Murray Medical Center sneaked out of the facility Sunday evening and took off in an unoccupied ambulance, then allowed it to wreck after she stopped and got out, authorities said.

The 19-year-old, who was in the hospital waiting to be transferred to another facility for a mental evaluation, according to Capt. John Cherry with the Murray County Sheriff’s Office, was found walking near the scene of the crash on Holly Creek Baptist Church property later Sunday night. She was taken back to the hospital and told officials where to find the ambulance the next morning.

The church’s pastor, the Rev. Danny Cochran, who does not live on the property, said he was alerted on Monday morning and learned it appeared the woman had gotten out of the ambulance to look at something before it began to roll downhill.
