COOPER CITY, Fla. — A Davie Fire Rescue crew needed a rescue crew of their own after the ambulance they were in was involved in a crash in Cooper City.

“I heard a crash and I looked up,” said Jill Zopfie who was on the phone at a nearby business. “I heard the sirens, I was on the phone and then I heard a big bang, I just looked up and there goes the ambulance truck.”

The accident happened just after 9 a.m. when the ambulance collided with a dark green SUV in the westbound lanes of Griffin Road at the intersection of SW 100th Avenue; the impact of the crash left the ambulance on its side.

Sean Pelletier, who was at a business next door to Zopfie, said he couldn’t believe what he saw.

“As it came through the intersection, I heard it hit, I looked up and just saw it sliding on its side to where it’s resting now,” said Pelletier.

Davie Fire Rescue spokesman Braulio Rosa at the time of the crash there were three paramedics and one patient inside the vehicle.

“They got banged up, as you can see it was probably a, it was pretty scary ride when you get hit and thrown like that inside the vehicle. They got banged up pretty good,” said Braulio.

The ambulance crew and patient were taken to Memorial Regional Hospital; none of their injuries was described as serious.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
