LOS ANGELES — Four people, including two firefighters, were injured Monday morning when an ambulance responding to an emergency crashed into a car at the intersection of Vanowen Street and Vineland Avenue in North Hollywood, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported.
Two civilians who were in the car suffered noncritical injuries and were taken to a local hospital.
Two firefighters who were in the ambulance suffered minor injuries and were also taken to a hospital.
The ambulance was responding to an emergency call at 9:20 a.m. with its lights and siren on. The ambulance and car were traveling the same direction, but the car did not stop and was hit when the ambulance made a right turn, police said.
“The accident was caused by the motorist, who failed to obey the law involving emergency vehicles using lights and sirens,” Los Angeles police Sgt. Matthew Bielski of the Valley Traffic Division said.
Ambulance collisions are not common, in part because firefighters are trained to stop and check intersections before they drive though, Bielski said.
When an ambulance has its lights and siren on, drivers should, “pull to the right, stop and wait till the ambulance has passed,” Bielski said.
