JESUP, Iowa — At least one person was reported to have life threatening injuries resulting from an accident between a pickup truck and a motorcycle Saturday night.
The accident happened at about 9:35 p.m. on Dubuque Road east of South Canfield Road. A motorcycle driven by Derek Lee Martie, 24, of Jesup collided with a pickup truck driven by Bryan Allen Cornwell, 22, of Oelwein.
According to the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office, Cornwell’s truck, heading westbound on Dubuque Road, crossed the center line and struck the motorcycle. Emergency crews found both Martie and his passenger, Katlyn Leekley, 20, of Jesup, in the north ditch. One of the victims was first taken by ambulance to Covenant Medical Center and the other was airlifted to Iowa City Hospitals and Clinics. The patient initially taken by ambulance was also later airlifted to Iowa City. Black Hawk County Sheriff Tony Thompson said he believed Leekley’s injuries were life threatening.
The sheriff’s department reported Cornwell was taken into custody eight miles west of the accident scene near Elk Run Heights for suspicion of operating while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are pending.
The sheriff’s department was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, Jesup Police Department, Evansdale Police Department, Dunkerton Ambulance, Covenant AirCare and Jesup EMT and fire department personnel.
