MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. — A Macomb County middle school is the latest recipient of a free automated external defibrillator (AED) provided by Medstar ambulance company.

L’Anse Creuse Middle School East in Chesterfield Township received the AED on Thursday, Sept. 18 when the Clinton Township-based ambulance company made the donation to Zach MacIntosh, the school’s principal.

Tom Barry, Medstar’s safety and clinical quality manager, said when an AED is used in a cardiac arrest, the chance of survival doubles.

“The AED provides voice and visual prompts to walk people through the process of applying pads and delivering a lifesaving shock,” Barry said in a news release.

School administrators said they plan to install the portable, user-friendly medical device near the gymnasium. The teaching staff will be trained in using the equipment, which also involves CPR training.

L’Anse Creuse Middle School East applied for the AED through the Shock and Save Community Initiative. The initiative provides mini-grants to purchase and donate AEDs to schools, churches, non-profit and civic organizations within the Medstar coverage area.
