D.C.'s embattled 911 center director resigns

Jennifer Green submitted her resignation after criticism following the Metro smoke incident in January

WASHINGTON — The director of D.C.'s 911 center has stepped down after criticism following the Metro smoke incident in January.

WJLA.com reported that city officials confirmed Tuesday that Jennifer Greene submitted her resignation Monday. Green, a 29-year veteran of the Metropolitan Police Department, was appointed to oversee the Office of Unified Communications in 2011.

The department most recently came under scrutiny following the emergency response to the January fatal smoke incident on Metro. A city review of the incident highlighted delays in the time it took to dispatch first responders and communicate information about the incident.

D.C.'s Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency Director Chris Geldart will serve as interim director until the mayor selects a permanent replacement.

The mayor said he didn’t know whether there would be an emphasis to promote from within the agency or to hire from outside.
